Diatom Dinnerware Set
This dinnerware set was my final for a ceramics class this spring. The beauty and intricacy of these microscopic organisms were captured through a process called mishima, in which a design is etched into the surface of unfired clay, then a glaze is applied over it, filling the lines. When dry, the excess glaze is scraped off, revealing the delicate linework you see here.
Acadian Coastline Bowl Set
This set was inspired by time spent paddling in the Deer Isle archipelago several years ago. That part of Maine’s coast continues to enchant me, and I wanted to recreate the salty mixture of brilliant jade waters and sandy shores with rough granite outlines. I used two different types of clear glazes throughout the set to create distinction between water and shoreline: The matte clear glaze, which is the interior base for both bowls, as well as the exterior of the cup, has a nice warm, off-white tone to it. This complemented the layered designs of the first bowl, the exterior of the second, and the inside of the cup, which were all clear gloss finishes.
